About This State
Massachusetts is one of the foundations of this project. I keep returning to its cities and towns because so much of the state reveals itself through surface, structure, and light. The visual thread runs through brick mill buildings, older downtown blocks, storefront glass, church towers, side streets, worn signs, and the smaller details that often say more than the landmark view ever could. This page gathers the places I’ve photographed so far and serves as an entry point into the work still taking shape across the state.
Visual Thread
Massachusetts rewards slow looking. Its older industrial cities, downtown facades, neighborhood streets, and coastal edges hold layers of time without needing to announce themselves. What draws me in is the tension between history and the everyday: geometry and wear, order and clutter, sunlight and shadow, old materials and present use. I’m less interested in postcard views than in the quieter evidence of place that appears block by block.

Fitchburg
A city of strong bones and visual contrast, Fitchburg keeps pulling me back through its brick facades, older storefronts, church architecture, signage, and shifting downtown light. Much of the work here begins in the center of the city, where shape, surface, and history sit close together.

Lowell
Lowell is one of the clearest expressions of Massachusetts as I see it: brick mills, canals, infrastructure, downtown geometry, and the long afterlife of industry. It is a place where history is not sealed off from the present but remains visible in the structure of the city itself.

Worcester offers scale without losing texture. Its downtown blocks, institutions, industrial remnants, and quieter in-between spaces create a place where the visual rhythm comes from contrast: civic and ordinary, formal and worn, open and compressed.

All of the cities and towns that make up the Massachusetts work at this stage. Some are places I know better than others, but all of them are part of the project as it grows.
